Very difficult, had a similar issue in the past

basically if you used the washing machine before and it was all fine then after a few washes it broke down...you pay. Most landlords try to avoid paying for anything in my experience even in a case like that where you are innocent. Check the contract but most say that you the house is given to you in perfect condition...etc...
