I think the mistake was to stake everything on Cav, and his sprint finish.

If we'd said that it could be Cav or Wiggins or Froome, it would have given us more options. Telling the world that it was Cav or nothing gave them ammunition against us, and they used it well. I'm glad the Germans didn't profit, though.
