The fact that years ago players (and their managers) were not only quite happy to wreck their bodies by playing injured (Bert Trautmann anyone ?!) cos there were less substitutes, but that they were also playing against less fit opponents and could therefore still manage when slightly injured.

And, as some bright spark already pointed out much more eloquently than I - they are all called Matthieu, Rossi, Arjen and Rio these days instead of proper man's names like Archie, Stanley and Reg. Poofs.
