Burgular alarums

After a spate of thefts in the area me and Old Woman are discussing getting one of them burgular alarum thingies (I did suggest we get a poomer instead but she was worried it might damage the sofa).

Can anyone off of on here clue me in to what I need to know before I part with my wonga?
