What's the point in signing Naughton this January?

As far as I am aware we have him till the end of the season anyway. Why bother wasting precious money on a player we have got till the end of the season?
We may as well use the money to bring other players in and then if we stay up look at signing him in the summer.
I don't get why people are getting so excited about us signing him. Doesn't make sense to me.
