My brothers Mrs was hit by a moped thing...

...she was shaken up for obvious reasons but thankfully he was OK...he immediately said he was sorry, that the accident was his fault and he wasn't injured...she agreed to swap phone numbers as it seemed polite and the right thing to do in the circumstances...in the meantime people who had seen the accident asked if she needed a witness and concurred that it was his fault...

As he had said that he was liable for the accident she agreed to let it go...she went on to thank the assorted people for their offers of help but there was no need and they all went their separate ways...

A few days later he phoned and said that his bike was damaged and she'd crashed into him and that the accident was her fault...she replied, taken slightly aback, that it was his fault, as he'd said at the time...his reply was there weren't any witnesses and she could either settle now or he'd get his insurance company to contacts hers and take it from there...

She tried to call his bluff except she didn't...the upshot was her insurance paid out and her premiums went up - it was either that or contest it in court and w**k loads and loads of money up the wall...

The lesson here is to take any names and addresses, however plausible someone seems, as you just don't know who's playing the system...
