Unless you think two wrongs make a right.

He admitted his wife damaged their car.

Regardless of being insured or not that is still a fact.

What you have suggested may indeed be the most practical way for him to proceed but dont gloss over the fact that you are using a situation to get out of paying for damage that his wife did to another persons car.
