you might be able to get a decent deal for a second hand one on Deremate.com too.
Another alternative is to go to a good bike shop and with their help, select a frame, gears, brakes etc and have them assemble it for you. They'll probably charge you 25 or 30 lucas to put it all together.
The trouble with some off the peg bikes is that they have fairly s**t gears or brakes stuck on a nice frame, so obviously that's a good way to get around it.
If you get self-repairing punture tyres too, that'll probly save you a lot of arsing around when you get inevitable puntures off the stoney roads.
