but I may have been (over-)influenced by the #mencallmethings posts on that there twitter yesterday.

More substantively, I think this is quite a good example of the effects and compromises of power. For years the lib dems have (often rightly) been very exercised about civil liberties, and government's tendency to trample on them.

Now they're in government, their response to worries about rubber bullers being used on protestors is "ever heard of a thing called the credit crunch?"

Not saying you're wrong, at all. But it's a good example of how priorities change between opposition and government.
