I'd generally avoid PC World, although a lot of a brands will be similar to those on the web. Acer ones tend to be fairly cheap build quality, but you would get more spec for your money

Things you probably want in that price range:
At least 4 gig of RAM (main criterion, I reckon)
Probably Intel i5 processor, rather than the cheaper ones
1TB storage (you could get away with less, but if you're spending ?500, there isn't much point)
You can use OpenOffice, which is a free office suite similar to older versions of MS Office. If you need the MS one then see if you can get an educational discounted version from somewhere.
