indeed

Nothing will change unless and until the general public stop wanting to be spoonfed their politics. Given we have a generation (or more) of people who have been spoonfed their education in schools and university, and an age where the quickest way to an answer is Google, rather than dusting off textbooks or the encyclopedia, I don't hold out much hope for people having the attention span to think for themselves and make their own minds up. Spend a few hours reading all the main party manifestos, research the candidtates and attend some hustings? Or just pick up your preferred daily rag and vote whichever way their editorial is leaning? In this modern world, it seems we're all too busy.

The government of the day will always want a media outlet 'on side' in order to disseminate their agenda, but more importantly they will always be afraid of the media's ability to bring them down.
