I appreciate that, but...

I still think you're missing the point.

I do know Poland. I even speak a bit of Polish. And you're right, there is history everywhere in Poland, there is more to know about the country than just in Auschwitz and, though I will visit Poland many more times in my life, I doubt I will ever go back there again as it is a genuinely unpleasant experience. Still, it means a lot of things to a lot of people and you can't discredit it simply because it doesn't feel right to you.

Anyway, what's rubbish about Auschwitz isn't the piles of shoes, it's the tourists having their photos taken in front of the shoes. Disgraceful.
