Thing is, I suppose, that comedians like Mark Thomas & Stewart Lee have been pointing out

that sort of thing for decades without ever resorting to racist language.

Without having seen the full context I can't really tell how ironic Boyle was; but my impression is that he did it for cheap laughs: "oooh, look at me being all edgy with my non-PC language"
