Take it to a vet for a post-mortem report

That will prove that it died of a heart attack or something, bingo, with one bound Schteve was free

If the post mortem shows that it died of starvation and neglect, bribe the vet to produce a report that says the right thing. (This is how expert evidence works in litigation.)
