Do Noble House first though. It picks up from TaiPan, 100 or so years on. Re-introduces some of the King Rat characters too, as it's not that far after WW2.
Whirlwind is 15 years after that, and set in Iran around the time of the revolution.
Apart from Clavell, who I've always described as painting landscapes with words, Cornwell is good, and I'm ashamed to say I actually enjoyed the Kate Mosse books too.
Or, and a quadrilogy by Stephen Donaldson (I think) about Merlin & Arthur.
