Formatting the c drive on vista. . .

How in the hell is it done? Lol. My dad has managed to download himself a pretty nasty virus, And i cant figure out how to format the c drive on visat, never had to do it before. The recovering discs that he had to make when he first got the computer will only delete things from the computer, but the virus remaines. . I need to to format but cant get my head around it . . Any ideas?
