Anyone know anything about netbooks?

I want to buy one but have a couple of questions.....

1) are they like real computers? Can you do all the normal things that you could do on a laptop for instance?

2) what is the battery life like these days for these things?

3) any recommenations? I'm looking to spend around ?300, is this realistic?
