The first world cup I properly remember was Spain 82. It seemed an impossibly exotic thing for an 11 year old.
Implausibly named men from all over the world with big hair. Fuzzy TV pictures, Zico, Socrates, Rossi, Altobelli, Platini. Amazing goals and excitement.
Schumacher assaulting Battiston and hearing my Dad say 'Cunt' for the first time. Dastardly Germans, cheating their way though.
Exciting matches galore.
Scotland getting humped by Brazil.
England scoring after 26 seconds against France. Captain Marvel. Marvellous.
This all helped me to form the opinion that:-
World cups should be in unfamiliar, hot countries with games at strange hours and fuzzy TV pictures, with commentators that sound like they are broadcasting down a phone line.
Not on Sky in HD from Stadium MK.
