In that case it was correct

because you were the object of the sentence - 'he sent a letter to me'. But in the example that Steve and Tricky corrected, you had made SCC and you the subject - so need to use the subjective pronouns. Think about it a little more - if you'd replaced your names with pronouns, would you have been comfortable saying "Us are experts". Of course not. Or "Me is an expert". Of course not. Adding in SCC has confused you and muddle your cases.
