I had a similar problem a while back. It should keep your data intact. I would get hold of service packs 1 and 2 on a USB key first, then you can do a full repair without connecting to the Internet. One weird thing is that IE7 reverted to IE6, but since I don't use it anyway, it wasn't a problem.
