Hmmm battery in our fairly old laptop is f**ked, but it does still work from mains.

Silly question, but is the knackered battery actually still in the laptop? The power will run through it i think, even if not charging it, or running off it, so if you have a gaping hole in the laptop where the battery should be, possible that could be why it won't run off mains.

I think.

Ours won't run at all off the battery, and it doesn't charge either.
