Technical Help Needed.............. ......

I have been given an old Laptop by a mate of mine, trouble is it didnt have a power adaptor or a battery. I have bought an adaptor from E-Bay, plugged it in but it still doesnt work, could some nice person please tell me whether it should now work or does it still need a battery to work? This is the first Laptop i have even looked at and im not to clued up on these sort of things.

I was assured that the battery was not essential but im not so sure. Its quite an old Laptop, a Dell Latitude CPx. I dont want to waste loads of money on it if it still wont work with a battery. I have tried Google but no-one could give me a straight answer. Can someone please Help? Thanks in advance.
