I think the editorial line is that they must give these stories a certain slant

obviously, the more controversial the headline and subheader, the more people will click on/read the story.

I presume that one of the measures of a journalist's competence at such publications is how many hits they get. To me it just shows that the editors don't give a f**k about it, they just want to shift copy and avoid being sued. If they do that, job done
