The non-academic subjects tended to be useful subjects that would lead to apprenticeship/trade etc. Now they tend to be subjects to ensure schools rise up the league tables, rather than having much value in terms of end use or intellectual challenge. But it's difficult to disengage from the fact that for the person gaining that qualification they've had to work to achieve it, and being negative becomes upsetting to the individual.
