Didn't they break the transfer record to buy Sutton?

Which, due to our inability or reluctance to get a good enough replacement soon enough, caused us eventually to go down (Ashley Ward didn't come until well into the season and even though a good player wasn't enough to replace Sutton).

Not that Super Chris was a waste of money (unless you're Chelsea...), but they did exceed all other's spending at the time.
