Our scouting system has been a joke; our youth system only now bearing fruit after many years of nothing; the board openly acknowledge that they know little about football. At Newcastle, Shearer has Ashley over a barrel, and will require big, big changes to be committed to (not only financially) if he's to take the job. Otherwise, it just isn't worth the hassle for him.

In any board/manager relationship, some degree of friction is actually healthy. Hearts have progressed this season thanks to Csaba Laszlo playing a clever, delicate game with Vladimir Romanov, gaining his trust and slowly beginning to dictate terms to him. To a lesser extent, this was how Norwich progressed during Worthington's early years too. The better and more in demand a manager is, the more he can bend a board to his will: but given Gunn is hardly going to be appointed manager by any other club, his position is weak, and all he can do is just accept what he's given.
