That's how the bug got me, too, the atmosphere at events.

Last year's sheffield 10k was my first, and I loved it. There's far fewer runners (more like 8000 I think) but you still get a good atmosphere- and the course is much less packed, so you don't get held up much.

Warning, though, Sheffield Has Hills, and while most of the course follows a valley and is flat, the start and finish lines are on higher ground, so the final 1k is a bit of an uphill slog. But by then the adrenaline has kicked in, and the crowds cheer you home.
