I think the notion of class is now no longer dertermined by spending power but by background because a lot of people I know from mining or steel worker families are university educated with decent jobs and I laugh at them when they get all Arfer Scargill on me So I don't think it's just the shift of the type of people that go to the football but more what is accepted in society, we have now curbed the mob mentality that would cause a normal person into a raging lunatic, that maybe 20 years ago would have gone unpunished. A bunch of Spurs fans getting done for homophobic chanting, re-wind 20 years ago the authorities probably would have encouraged it. Hoolihans know that they can't go to games anymore and cause the same amount of trouble that they used to.
