I Don't Understand

Neil Adams just criticized the team for a lacklustre effort.
I know we can't count on the team winning each match, or showing great skill each time but you have to expect a 100% effort from a professional footballer each time they take the field. Does lack of ability come across as lack of effort? At this stage of the season with all that was riding on today I can't imagine the commentator would say there was not 100% committment. If he is correct, then shame on the players.
