I want the board to oversee the football side of the club and hold the manager to account and ensure that ensuring that the overall systems and processes are robust and effective. That doesn't mean that you micro-manage every signing.

I imagine the conversation might go

"OK Bryan, we spent ?XXX on Killen's wages and agents fees. Can you explain why he looks unfit, out of form and can't even make the bench? Can you explain how we came to the decision to sign him? What checks did we do on him?"

Similarly I would periodically want the manager to explain to me how the scouting system works overall, how it is ensuring that we find good players who are cheap.

It is not good enough just to let the manager 'get on with it' there needs to be some oversight.
