Tech help and recommendations please

Looking to build a Social Networking site, where groups, events and a forum are needed.

Also possibly, chat, adding other members as friends etc - along the lines of FB.

Wondered if anyone had any experience in this kind of software, as looking to run it from my server. Have tried a couple of the white collar websites, but they are obviously quite restrictive in their content, with the best probably being ning.com.

So any recommendations please - plus would like it to be free / cheap - I know, not asking for much!
