we had this in the summer

lots of F8 hitting as you try to startup sometimes works to get you into safe mode. but in the end I reinstalled the operating system. and then did lots of rough stuff to move things over.
seems to have happened to a few people - vista upgrade tries to install on XP and it's ugly.
