f**king internet, as i was saying.....

I'm fed up with hotmail now so i might go to something like gmail. I have messenger on my laptop right. What I want to know is can I still chat to my friends who use msn messenger but with a gmail (or something of the like) email account. Is it as simple as adding their details to my new email contact list, opening google talk and thn able to chat? Or will my computer do an eppy and my head fall off?
