I thought maybe amounts could be somehow changed.

I read a recent case where an online bookie had faulty software that allowed people to past post bets.

They would pull up a bet and do everything until clicking the confirm screen.
If something favorable occured shortly into the game then they would confirm the bet.
The software recorded the bet at the time they opened up the bet not the confirmed time.
