Techy Help with removeable disks

Is there a limit on a flash drive/removeable disk?

I've got 800 photo's on a 1gb card, and they only came to 300mb, and it wouldn't let me create anymore

Anyone know why?

Is the obvious solution to just organise them and put them into folders?
