Run properly, they should be top 6 every season, eventually mounting a challenge for the top 4: Newcastle are the fifth biggest club in the country by my reckoning, with gates that are quite extraordinary. But they've not been run properly - anything but, in fact - so have finished in the bottom half more often than not over the past decade, even flirting with relegation on occasion.

Newcastle, you may like to know, are the only club in the Prem who regularly buck the trend of what you pay equals where you finish. They have the 5th largest wage bill by a distance; but don't get anywhere near a 5th place finish because of years of shocking mismanagement,
