If its a standard USB HDD then it will won't have any way of sending data over the network
The hard drive needs to be run off a file server for your computers to see a network share.
Some routers have a USB port that allow you to connect printers and hard drives to but they contain all the file sharing functions, not the hard drive.
You either need a NAS hard drive or a router that can do file sharing. The BT Home hub does not have a file sharing feature.
