You would need an network hard drive
I would be surprised if you can buy a USB to RJ45 adaptor as it would need to operate as a file server.
It sounds like you might have just attached a USB network adaptor which won't work.
You need a NAS hard drive or a switch/router that has built in USB file sharing.
