Any computer type techie people about ?

Need some advice please. Today I bought my 1st memory stick (2 Gigabyte) and began downloading my music. Then it was full - but properties sez I have used well under half the space, about 750Mb.
If I delete tracks I can load others.
Why don't I get what I paid for ? Any ideas please ??
