This is surreal.

I never, ever imaged discussing Ngugi on a Norwich City website, I really didn't.

I've read a lot of Ngugi - 'Petals of Blood' is my favourite although 'The River Between' and 'Weep Not, Child' were also a great read. Achebe, Sembene Ousmane and Soyinka are pretty good, too. I worked with a Zimbabwean a while back and she recommended me Dambudzo Marechera ...

Heppenstall - recommend the Roussel translation and his own novel, The Blaze of Noon, which you'll have to buy 2nd hand as it's out of print. Working on my intro to it now.

Heppenstall is best known for his account of a fight with Orwell, when Orwell practically tried to kill him. He was quite an unsavoury character, and ended up going insane and espousing some extreme Right political opinions - the stuff he wrote before that happened was fascinating though ... perfect for an essay on formal invention and cultural memory, in fact ...
