I wouldn't go that far. The larger outfits are much less at risk of that sort of thing

and a lot of the smaller outfit will outsource the card collection business, so even if they got turned over, your financial details wouldn't be there to be stolen and misused.

Personally, I don't let risk of fraud stop me from buying thing I want to buy over the internet. If an online store takes Paypal payments, as well as card payments, then I will always always pay via paypal - even if it ends up going on the same card as I would have used if paying the site directly - that way I know that fewer distinct organisations have my details - the fewer people have my details the lower the risk.

And I just keep an eye on my statements and that.
