I think that the reason I was annoyed about the Earnie release clause

was that he was in a weak position too: he'd fallen out with Robson, wasn't getting a game and was desperate to leave

The ONLY reason that WE were desperate to sign him was to save Worthy's/the Board's arse. We'd just sold Deano (and didn't manage to drive a particularly hard bargain, January or not), and so not getting in a replacement "big name" striker would have been politically very difficult. It wasn't to assist in a promotion push: we were already f**ked. It was cosmetic only.
