But in Pete Davies' majestic All Played Out (the best book about football I've ever read), in which the author had behind the scenes access to the squad during the run-up to and throughout Italia 90, what emerges is a picture of a man hustled, harried, under pressure... but always courteous, engaging and polite. Of course he's got a tough side - but the man wouldn't get such fantastic testimony from so many who he's worked with if he was the cantankerous old sod you make him out to be here.
