It All Started To "Go Wrong" As Soon As We Were Promoted....
IMHO.
In a cruel, cruel world, the minute Premiership football was assured, Worthy would have been relieved of his duties there and then, logic saying the best chance of staying in the Prem would have been to get an experienced and respected man at the helm with the relevant experience. Of course, that was never going to happen, and its all in hindsight, but it might have been a sensible move-though we would, perhaps, have been castigated for removing the Manager that got us promoted!
So that was never an option. However, the first mistakes were made when Worthy shipped out the character players-Malky and Iwan. Surely someone could have seen that Malky had some good playing years ahead of him still, West Ham and Watford did. Ditto Iwan-his playing days would have been even more infrequent, but it would have been good to keep him around for his experience, his character, his presence-OK, not first footballing equals, but they would have been a tremendous help.
Getting the "big name" foreign players in must have ruffled a few feathers-I wonder what wages and terms Helveg demanded? However, for him to be lured here-and then barely played-smacked of a lot of things, not least a waste of money and time and lack of research into new signings. Yes, again, its in hindsight, but were there, could there have been, players with experience of playing in England and the Premiership as an alternative-you'd like to think so.
Kevin Cooper and Kevin Harper did well for us, they would have been affordable aquisitions, yet, as far as I am aware, no effort was made to sign either of them.
Its bloody ages ago now and I won't go on, but to blame all of the existing malaise on Grant isn't fair-I think it goes back a lot, lot further, and, like wet rot, did a lot of unseen damage before it became really obvious.
