re: chinese pronunciation.
The fact is, there are two sounds in chinese which sound like the english 'tch' sound, one created with the tongue near the front of the mouth (ch) and one created at the back of the mouth (q). The word Chongqing (a region of China) uses both sounds.
As we only have one set of letters to represent the sound, we had to find another way to indicate the difference, and we chose to use the letter q without a u after it , as it wasn't used already and was part of the standard keyboard.
