I was given the impression he HAD spent it (and more)

not only did he start spending our Prem money while we were still in Division 1 but he'd already spent the rest and started spending the next years parachute payments (the Ashton purchase) while in the Prem.

Wasn't the problem that he spent it on foreigners who he wouldn't trust enough to play and deadbeat has-beens (Charlton, Stuart) who couldn't play.
