manager can sometimes provide the boost of profile and confidence needed. Change public opinion about the club therefore attacting players. If big Sam had bee replaced with a bigger manager the transition would be seen by the public and by the squad as a move forward. Some players may have seen PG as a move backwards i.e hucks, safri.
