Can anyone explain to me...

...exactly what value there is in testing a professional footballer over a distance of 100m ?

Long-distance slow jogging, for stamina, perhaps;
Wind sprints, for stamina (repetitive short-burst), perhaps;
20m, timed at 10 and 20, definitely;
40m, timed at 20 and 40, definitely;
Shuttle: 5, 10, 5 or 10, 20, 10, definitely.

But why 100m sprints ?!!
