Agree - the 'future' in football very rarely works now though, does it?
a) Sign a good young player - they are gone in 24 months max.
b) Sign a promising young player for the future - the demand for immediacy in results means eventually they are replaced by either 1) better, short term good players, or 2) better good young players (see a).
c) Allow a promising young prospect to come through the ranks, and eventually either a or b will happen to them
d) Sign someone outside of those parameters. I wouldnt say Iwan, Cureton, Malky, Hucks, Dion, were signed with the future in mind.
I'm sure my argument is a little flawed there, but some of it holds true I think
