the offside rule can hardly be called a grey area

it's cut-and-dried - the only reason it seems so complicated is because the assistant referees don't know the rules and are, for the most part, fat old men who can't get up and down the stairs, let alone a 110 metre touchline.

as for diving, obviously it is a more subjective judgment. i'm sure more intelligent people than myself could codify exactly what a 'dive' constitutes, but at a basic level, you *know* when a player is diving. not least because if they don't get anything they will normally feign injury or try to get the other player booked. what i'm saying is that a yellow card for a dive just isn't sufficient, because referees just can't tell a lot of the time, and the act of diving, to varying degrees, can have a huge effect on the outcome of whole seasons.
